The
umpires decisions are immediate and signalled by simultaneous use
of flags and sound signals.
A boat can lodge a protest against the opponent by waving the Yankee
flag, at that point the Umpires intervene showing:
WHITE
AND GREEN when it is deemed that no rules have been violated.
BLUE
when the blue boat has violated a rule. The penalty can be completed
after the boat has started correctly but before completion.
YELLOW
when the yellow boat has violated a rule, also in this case the
penalty can be completed after the boat has started correctly but
before completion.
RED
when shown together with a blue or yellow flag it means
that the identified boat must complete the penalty immediately even
if it is the first penalty.
BLACK
when shown together with a blue or yellow flag it means that the
identified boat is disqualified and must immediately leave the racing
area. This can happen when a boat has been given three penalties
or for serious unsportsmanlike behaviour.
