From 09 to 13 July the 9° Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy at Marina di Ravenna. The best match race in Italy

Everything is ready in Marina di Ravenna for the return of great world racing, the ninth edition of the traditional Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy from 09 to 13 July. The Trombini Trophy, the first ISAF grade 1 event in Italy has over the years become one of the most important meets of the International calendar, thanks to the organization of Progetto Vela in collaboration with Circolo Velico Ravennate and International Yacht Club Marinara and thanks to the many sponsors, all united in memory of the well known yachtsman from Ravenna, Roberto Trombini.

The Trombini Trophy 2003 proves itself to be an extraordinary opportunity to see some of the great experts of this type of sailing. This year there will be 12 famous skippers, all top match racers promising a great show. The races can be seen from the grandstand on the pier of the port of Marina di Ravenna. The Trombini Trophy 2003 offers a series of challenges between the big world names and the best of the Italian yachtsmen. James Spithill, the young Australian helmsman in the America’s Cup with One World, the outstanding Danish skipper Jes Gram-Hansen (number 2 in the world), the Englishman Chris Law, recent winner of the Swedish event at Marstrand, New Zealander Cameron Appleton, reserve for Dean Barker’s Team New Zealand at the America’s Cup, Franchman Luc Pillot of Le Defi, Dutchman Roy Heiner, Olympian and ocean navigator, among the most complete figures of modern sailing, young up and coming Englishman Ian Williams.

The Italians participating will be Paolo Cian, the best of the Italians in the world classification and ex helmsman of Mascalzone Latino in the America’s Cup, Tommaso Chieffi, ex Moro di Venezia and ex tactician of Oracle BMW, and yachtsman Matteo Simoncelli with an excellent 20° position in the world.

The programme includes: 09 July boat trials using 10 identical craft class TOM 28, designed by Giovanni Ceccarelli from Ravenna, designer also of Mascalzone Latino in the last America’s Cup. Followed by the skippers’ meeting and official opening ceremony with gala dinner at the International Yacht Club Marinara. The races start on Thursday 10th with Round Robins for qualification followed by quarter finals. Semifinals and finals are programmed for Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July.
