X° Trofeo Challenge Roberto Trombini 2004
**Start of the Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy Match Races 2004
** Perfect conditions: sun, calm sea and wind10-14 knots
** Spectacular matches: James Spithill (Luna Rossa) takes the lead.
The first day of the match races at Marina di Ravenna
for the 10th Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy, an international
Match Race event Organised by Progetto Vela, in collaboration with
Circolo Velico Ravennate and the International Yacht Club Marinara.
The weather conditions made for some exciting scenes:
hard fought races, penalties and arrivals at top speed. At the end
of the day only one skipper won all the matches, the Australian
champion James Spithill (who races for Luna Rossa Challenge). Also
in the limelight Englishman Ian Williams, and the young Australian
Micheal Dunstan, Dane Lars Nordbjerg and also the 20 year old Russian
Eugeny Neugodnikov gave some surprising performances on this first
day of the tenth edition of the Trombini Trophy. It was a difficult
start for Matteo Simoncelli of Ravenna (Itway Match Race Team),
who was not up to his usual recent high standards, he gained 3 victories
and 4 defeats. Same result also for the other Italian skipper Flavio
Favini (Mascalzone Latino). The two Italians fought with different
spirits: apart from racing ‘at home’ Simoncelli must
also defend 11th place he recently gained in the world ranking list
whilst Favini is on his first experience with the match race before
his participation in the America’s Cup with Mascalzone Latino.
Today saw the debut to Grade 1 ISAF of nineteen
years old Dane Peter Wibroe who was called in at the last minute
to substitute his fellow countryman the great Jes Gram-Hansen.
The races of the tenth Trombini Trophy Challenge
continue tomorrow, Friday 2nd July in the harbour of Marina di Ravenna;
the programme includes the remaining round robins and the start
of the quarter finals. Semi-finals and finals will be raced on Saturday
3rd and Sunday 4th July.
