2004 : Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy - The Tenth Year
The first International Match Race in Italy, the oldest, the most
popular, the most emulated.
This year is the tenth edition of the Roberto Trombini Challenge
Trophy at Marina di Ravenna,
From 30th June to 4th July 2004. It can’t be by chance that
the driving force of one of the most important Italian sailing
events in the past years is called “Progetto Vela” -
Sailing Project.
Presided over by Mr. Andrea Trombini, the project has become a
reality; the Trombini challenge
trophy has been a great success, it has given many enthusiasts
the possibility to see top sailing champions in action just a few
yards from the shore. It has brought international match racing
to Marina di Ravenna putting it in the forefront along with the
yachting clubs and organizations, it has become, over the years,
one of the most important events of the international calendar.
The decennial edition of the Trombini Challenge Trophy promises
to be a big success thanks to the high level of organization by
Progetto Vela in collaboration with Circolo Velico Ravennate and
International Yacht Club Marinara and thanks to the support of
the many sponsors united in remembrance of Roberto Trombini, well
known yachtsman from Ravenna.
The participation of 12 world level
skippers and some big names from the America’s Cup, the
possibility to follow the races from the grandstand on the pier
at the port of Marina di Ravenna,
the hospitality village and many other attractions make the 10th
Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy yet again another extraordinary
occasion not to be missed by all match race enthusiasts.
America’s Cup,
the birthof Match Racing - a bit of history
It all started in 1851 around the Isle of Wight; it was a race open to all nations
but only one American yacht, named simply America, challenged 16 English boats
for a solid silver cup weighing over 4 kg known as the “One Hundred Guinea
Cup” . America won and from that day it has been known as the “America’s
Cup”. The Americans were reigning champions until 1983 when the cup finally
changed hands, won by an Australian team with the Australia II; in that same
year Italy joined the challenge for the first time with the unforgettable Azzurra.
Il Moro di Venezia was the first Italian challenger ever to reach the finals
racing against America 3 in 1992. Over the centuries the rules have been modified,
the boats have become highly technical but the team spirit, the will to win and
the challenge remain the same.
Technical data of TOM 28
Tom 28 was thought-out and accomplished by
Ravenna designer, Giovanni Ceccarelli, for the Trombini Match Race.
For the realization of this monotype the designer sought the collaboration
of the technical directors of the Ravenna event and some of the
most well-known yachtsmen. The eight and a half metres long Tom
28 is the most advanced monotype for Match Racing in the world.
A guarantee of greater performance: light and with very ample sails,
exceptional manoeuvrability even with light wind, the Tom 28 represents
yet another reason to attend the'Trombini'regattas.
