Challenge Trophy 2004
. The tenth edition of the Roberto Trombini Challenge
Trophy at
Marina di Ravenna
· James Spithill (Luna Rossa) is tipped to win against
11 teams
. Debut in the Match Race for Flavio Favini (Mascalzone Latino)
The X Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy Match Race starts on
1st July
in Marina di Ravenna.
Organised by Progetto Vela, in collaboration with the Circolo
Velico
Ravennate and International Yacht Club Marinara, Trombini Challenge
Trophy
is the first international match race ISAF grade 1 event in Italy
and one of
the most prestigious competitions on the world calendar.
The official programme of the first day sees the beginning of
the
challenges with the preliminary Round Robins: during the opening
ceremony on
the 30th of June a draw will be taken to decide the yacht assignments
and "
flights" for the first pairings.
The Round Robins will start around 12:00. As usual the pectacular
challenges
will be held within the inner harbour of the port. A grandstand
has been
specially erected for the public at the end of the wide pier
at the entrance
to the port. There will be a running commentary of the the most
important
scenes of the matches.
Again this year 12 great skippers specialised
in match racing will participate at the Trombini Trophy together
with well known
names from the American’s Cup and other teams at the top
of the ranking lists.
James Spithill, new comer to the Luna Rossa Challenge, will be
the man to
watch, probably future helmsman of the Italian team in the American’s
Cup 2007..
He is presently number four of the world ranking list of this
speciality and will face some expert antagonists, among them
2 outstanding
Italians: Matteo Simoncelli (Itway Match Race Team), helmsman
from
Ravenna, and Flavio Favini, appointed to take the helm of the
next Mascalzone
Latino in the American’s Cup 2007.
Among the other skippers: the young Lars Nordbjaerg, ussian
Eugeny
Neogodnikov (both in the top 20 world ranking), Australian Michael
Dunstan (OZBoy syndicate of the American’s Cup challenge),
Englishman Paul
Campbell-Jones, Frenchman Sebastian Col and Dutch champion Roy
Heiner,
Olympic medallist with extraordinary versatility from the American’s
Cup
to ocean sailing.
The matches for the Trombini Trophy will take place from Thursday
the 1st
to Sunday the 4th July starting with two Round Robins followed
by
quarter, semi-finals and finals programmed for Saturday and Sunday.
