  • PAOLO CIAN IS THE WINNER OF THE XI ROBERTO TROMBINI CHALLENGE TROPHY
  • HE BEAT SPITHILL IN THE SEMIFINALS AND HANSEN IN THE FINAL
  • THIRD PLACE FOR JAMES SPITHILL AND FOURTH PLACE FOR FRENCHMAN, COL
  • AN ITALIAN WINS THE TOMBINI TROPHY AFTER 10 YEARS (MARIO CELON ’95)

The Neapolitan helmsman Paolo Cian is winner of the 2005 edition of the 2005 Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy, ISAF grade one match race event, after beating Bjorn Hansen (Swedish) 1-0 in the finals. After 10 years an Italian wins the Trombini Trophy.

Great finals for the XI edition of the Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy in Marina di Ravenna.
Slight wind made it a very difficult day for the yachtsmen and for the racing committee, the organizers worked wonders and were able to complete almost the whole programme and starting the finals just one minute before the lapse of the time limit at 18.00 hours.

The long closing day of the Trombini Trophy Challenge 2005 started with two play-off matches for the quarter finals; Bjorn Hansen (Sweden) beat Englishman Ian William in a match where the two teams overtook each other at least 5 times. Immediately after James Spithill (Luna Rossa Challenge) beat Sten Mohr (DK) who had protested for a alleged false start by the Australian.

The semi finals were between Paolo Cian and James Spithill and between Bjorn Hansen and Sebastien Col (K-Challenge). This was the start of a long wait for the wind conditions to improve, it had been steadily decreasing and then returned but the slights gusts never reached over 4-5 knots.
The calm winds lead to intervals between matches and a long wait for the finals.

In the semi finals between Paolo Cian and James Spithill the Neapolitan won the first match then Spithill brought the score to even, that lead to an exciting paly-off after more than two hours waiting for the wind. Neck to neck start, first upwind crossing with Spithill in the lead until halfway on the downwind course when Cian attacked and overtook him. On the second upwind course Spithill took the lead again; astounding manoeuvre and then Paolo Cian’s last and last and decisive attack. Cian wins and goes on to the final. The favourite James Spithill has to make do with 3rd place.

In the other semi final Sebastien Col is initially at an advantage then equals with Hansen who demonstrates some incredible recoveries. Hansen wins the play-off hands down and goes through to the final.

It was uncertain whether or not the finals could be raced due to complete lack of wind. The committee decided to move the racing area further out to try to utilize odd gusts of wind during late afternoon and it worked. Just one minute before 18.00 hrs,. the set time limit, the finals were announced. First for third place a definite win through for James Spithill. The grand final between Cian and Hansen was more hard fought, the latter made an early start and was forced to cross the starting line twice. Cian kept control and gained advantage particularly on the upwind courses but his efforts were in vain, Paolo Cian victoriously passes the winning line and wins the eleventh edition of the Roberto Trombini Challenge trophy.

STATEMENTS

PAOLO CIAN:
“ I must thank my crew of champions: tactician Pierluigi Fornelli, Nello Pavoni and Nando Colannino. Thanks also to Andrea Trombini and all the staff for the perfect organization under difficult conditions. I would like to compliment also Matteo Plazzi, a great principle race officer, who has made difficult decisions and important for us. Some years ago we got to the finals and we lost to Sten Mohr, this time we made it and it is wonderful. We are proud to have our names engraved on this important trophy.”

ANDREA TROMBINI:
“ We had a certain feeling before this eleventh edition, there was a favourite who could have won for the third time and take the trophy. This brought up some questions about the future of the event but seeing these yachtsmen, their skill and enjoyment, has made us want to continue. We’ll see you next year, at the twelfth Roberto Trombini Challenge.”

JAMES SPITHILL
“ There have been some difficult days racing because of the lack of wind, my crew have been fantastic and I must thank them. We missed out on luck but a third place in this event is a prestigious result. I would like to say thank you to Andrea and Angela Trombini for their hospitality and organization which has been perfect, as always, and I hope to be back next year.

Technical data of TOM 28

Tom 28 was thought-out and accomplished by Ravenna designer, Giovanni Ceccarelli, for the Trombini Match Race. For the realization of this monotype the designer sought the collaboration of the technical directors of the Ravenna event and some of the most well-known yachtsmen. The eight and a half metres long Tom 28 is the most advanced monotype for Match Racing in the world.
A guarantee of greater performance: light and with very ample sails, exceptional manoeuvrability even with light wind, the Tom 28 represents yet another reason to attend the'Trombini'regattas.

America’s Cup,
the birthof Match Racing - a bit of history

It all started in 1851 around the Isle of Wight; it was a race open to all nations but only one American yacht, named simply America, challenged 16 English boats for a solid silver cup weighing over 4 kg known as the “One Hundred Guinea Cup” . America won and from that day it has been known as the “America’s Cup”. The Americans were reigning champions until 1983 when the cup finally changed hands, won by an Australian team with the Australia II; in that same year Italy joined the challenge for the first time with the unforgettable Azzurra. Il Moro di Venezia was the first Italian challenger ever to reach the finals racing against America 3 in 1992. Over the centuries the rules have been modified, the boats have become highly technical but the team spirit, the will to win and the challenge remain the same.
