Great number of spectators at Marina di Ravenna for the finals.

New Zealand champion Chris Dickson (BMW Oracle Racing) has won the XII edition of the Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy ISAF Grade 1 world event in Marina di Ravenna. Dickson beat Italian Paolo Cian (Team Viano Mercedes-Benz) 3-1 in an electrifying final. Third place for Bjorn Hansen who beat Mathieu Richard 3-0.

Great finals at the XII Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy which has become a classic event and has given Italy world wide recognition in match racing. With winds of 6-8 knots it was possible to complete the racing programme attracting crowds of supporters and sigh-seers. Many spectators for the semi-finals and finals, both on the grandstand and on water close to the action and the race committee boat.

The two semi-finals ended with two direct triumphs; Chris Dickson knocked out the young Frenchman Mathieu Richard (3-0) whilst Paolo Cian didn’t let Bjorn Hansen take over (same score 3-0). A strange thing happened in the first two matches of the semi-finals, both Richard and Hansen passed the finishing line by mistake after the second lap without noticing the flag for 3 runs. The other due duels were easily won by Dickson and Cian.

As expected the final was between Chris Dickson and Paolo Cian, international star and winner of the 2005 trophy challenge. The final lived up to expectations, every lap of each race was full of surprises, overtakes, penalties and flying finishes.

Cian started in the lead and was ahead at the first mark. Dickson caught up and overtook at the second windward course and Cian got two penalties, one at the finishing line, he was beaten by just 3 seconds. The second race saw a double overtake at the mark and Cian won by one length.
The third race was a close duel but Dickson won. The fourth and final race was decided by a sudden change of wind. Cian was in the lead on the first upwind course with 8 seconds advantage. On the second windward course Cian opted for the right side leaving Dickson behind on the left. Cian lost the wind whilst Dickson sped towards the lay-line, with a decisive advantage, winning with a 40 seconds margin. An equal duel between two great helms who congratulated each other with champagne. That’s the way it went for Paolo Cian, it is his second consecutive success in the Trombini Challenge. Cian has the chance of competing for the trophy which is assigned to the skipper who wins three editions. Present two time winners are: Peter Holmberg, Magnus Holmberg and James Spithill.

After the spectacular fleet race prize giving and celebrations took place by the waterfront. That concludes the 2006 edition of the Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy, organized by Progetto Vela in collaboration with Circolo Velico Ravennate. See you next year.

Technical data of TOM 28

Tom 28 was thought-out and accomplished by Ravenna designer, Giovanni Ceccarelli, for the Trombini Match Race. For the realization of this monotype the designer sought the collaboration of the technical directors of the Ravenna event and some of the most well-known yachtsmen. The eight and a half metres long Tom 28 is the most advanced monotype for Match Racing in the world.
A guarantee of greater performance: light and with very ample sails, exceptional manoeuvrability even with light wind, the Tom 28 represents yet another reason to attend the'Trombini'regattas.

America’s Cup,
the birthof Match Racing - a bit of history

It all started in 1851 around the Isle of Wight; it was a race open to all nations but only one American yacht, named simply America, challenged 16 English boats for a solid silver cup weighing over 4 kg known as the “One Hundred Guinea Cup” . America won and from that day it has been known as the “America’s Cup”. The Americans were reigning champions until 1983 when the cup finally changed hands, won by an Australian team with the Australia II; in that same year Italy joined the challenge for the first time with the unforgettable Azzurra. Il Moro di Venezia was the first Italian challenger ever to reach the finals racing against America 3 in 1992. Over the centuries the rules have been modified, the boats have become highly technical but the team spirit, the will to win and the challenge remain the same.
