First day of the races within the harbour of marina
di Ravenna for the XII edition of the Roberto Trombini Challenge
Trophy ISAF Grade 1 world event.
Perfect weather conditions, sun, fresh temperatures and constant
thermal winds of 8 knots. There were all of 40 matches on two courses
thereby completing 8 qualifying flights.
There were some spectacular races and close encounters
as often happens during the first elimination races. Several penalties
from the umpires, often decisive for a particular match. At the
end of the first day of round robins, after 8 flights Champion from
New Zealand Chris Dickson (BMW Oracle Racing) is in the lead with
6 victories in 7 races (6-1 he was beaten only by Frenchman Mathieu
Richard). Italian Paolo Cian (Team Viano Mercedes) comes second
after 6 races (5-1) equalizing with Richard followed by Bjorn Hansen
from Sweden (5-2) then the other Italian Matteo Simoncelli (4-3)
- a good start for the helm from Ravenna. Frenchman Damian Iehl
scored 3-4, Martin Angsell from Sweden 2-4, Simon Minoprio from
New Zealand 2-5 and then Russian Andrei Arbuzov and Tino Ellegast
from Germany both won only one match (1-6 ).
The most exciting match of the day was between
Paolo Cian and Chris Dickson . The Italian started in the lead but
was penalized in the incident at leeward mark and Dickson was forced
to be entangled with the mark anchor line.
Cian got several red flags from the umpires, as normally happens
when it appears that a helm has caused an obstacle to his rival,
until Dickson managed to get free. The challenge continued with
Cian taking another two penalties and he decided to pull out without
reproach.
Friday 9th – another 5 flights to complete
the round robins and then on to the quarter finals. Semi-finals
Saturday and finals on Sunday.
