Next to the last day of the yachting ‘show’ at Marina di Ravenna for the XII edition of the Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy ISAF Grade 1 world event.
5-8 knots, 30 exciting races watched by a large public both on the water and on land. Predictions have been confirmed; Chris Dickson (NZ) in the semi-finals against Mathieu Richard (FR) and Bjorn Hansen (SE) against Paolo Cian (IT) return match of the 2005 finals.

Ideal conditions: light wind 5-6 knots from inland in the morning, three flights to complete the round robins. Fresher thermal winds up to about 8 knots in the afternoon for the quarter finals; exciting challenges full of penalties and overtakes.

Dickson is impeccable, he won the rounds beating Martin Angsell 3-0 in the quarter finals. Full points also for Bjorn Hansen (SE), second at the end of the round robins and victorious in the quarter finals against Damien Iehl. Hard fight for the last placings to reach the quarter finals. Matteo Simoncelli from Ravenna has paid a high price he lost 3 matches and takes 9th place, eliminated by Martin Angsell (SE).

Paolo Cian (Team Viano Mercedes) climbed back in the quarter finals after a score of 0-1 for the young Dane Peter Wibroe who was advantaged by a penalty to Cian at the start. The matches were close but Cian’s experience won in the end. At the decisive point Cian forced Wibroe to take a penalty before the start thereby defending his advantage in the three rounds without errors. A hard fought victory also for Richard against Nordbjaerg after 4 dramatic challenges.

Semi-finals Sunday 11th morning at Marina di Ravenna; as expected the favourites are in the lead. Chris Dickson against Mathieu Richard whilst Bjorn Hansen races against Paolo Cian in the return match of the 2005 finals won by the Neapolitan helm.

As always a full programme from ProgettoVela in collaboration with Circolo Velico Ravennate. In the morning a regatta crewed by the Industrialist’s Association in Mumm 30’s: Rimini won against Forli and Ravenna. Later the Industrialist’s association hosted a gala evening at the Matilda nightclub for the yachtsmen and friends.

Technical data of TOM 28

Tom 28 was thought-out and accomplished by Ravenna designer, Giovanni Ceccarelli, for the Trombini Match Race. For the realization of this monotype the designer sought the collaboration of the technical directors of the Ravenna event and some of the most well-known yachtsmen. The eight and a half metres long Tom 28 is the most advanced monotype for Match Racing in the world.
A guarantee of greater performance: light and with very ample sails, exceptional manoeuvrability even with light wind, the Tom 28 represents yet another reason to attend the'Trombini'regattas.

America’s Cup,
the birthof Match Racing - a bit of history

It all started in 1851 around the Isle of Wight; it was a race open to all nations but only one American yacht, named simply America, challenged 16 English boats for a solid silver cup weighing over 4 kg known as the “One Hundred Guinea Cup” . America won and from that day it has been known as the “America’s Cup”. The Americans were reigning champions until 1983 when the cup finally changed hands, won by an Australian team with the Australia II; in that same year Italy joined the challenge for the first time with the unforgettable Azzurra. Il Moro di Venezia was the first Italian challenger ever to reach the finals racing against America 3 in 1992. Over the centuries the rules have been modified, the boats have become highly technical but the team spirit, the will to win and the challenge remain the same.
