- Marina di Ravenna, the start of the Roberto Trombini Challenge
Trophy
- Veteran car “rally” with the skippers, opening
ceremony and fireworks display
- From tomorrow until Sunday great international match racing
- Matches between James Spithill, Paolo Cian, Philippe Presti
and Bertrand Pacè
ISAF grade 1 match race event organized in Italy
which each year brings together the best of world match racing.
1930 hrs the traditional “skippers’
rally” in veteran cars each skipper flying his national flag,
from the centre of Marina di Ravenna to Piazzale Adriatico, headquarters
of the event.
2000 hrs at the Circolo Velico Ravennate opening
ceremony with Progetto Vela’s president Andrea Trombini and
local dignitaries for the presentation of the skippers and first
briefing with the umpires. The evening will continue with aperitifs,
welcome dinner and talk-show with skippers and eminent guests followed
by a spectacular fireworks display.
The matches will be raced from 12th to 15th July
starting with the Round Robins and quarter finals on Thursday and
Friday, semi-finals on Saturday and on Sunday the finals to decide
the winner and 3° place followed by a team race.
The attention is on the return of James Spithill,
helm of Luna Rossa Challenge
in his first official race after the America’s Cup in Valencia.
For the 27 year old Australian champion it is the fourth time at
the Trombini Challenge Trophy and he has already won twice (the
other two time winners are Peter Holmberg and Magnus Holmberg);
if James wins again this year the Challenge Trophy will go to him.
There could have some hot competition: Frenchman
Philippe Presti, world and Olympic champion and Spithills’
sparring partner on Luna Rossa; Italian match race champion Paolo
Cian, helm of Shosholoza at Valencia, veteran yachtsman Bertrand
Pacè; South African Ian Ainslie strategist of Shosholoza,
and the present number 1 on the ranking list – Ian Willians
(British).

THE ROBERTO TROMBINI CHALLENGE TROPHY
The 2007 edition retains its success formula; conceived by Progetto
Vela, whose President is Andrea Trombini, in collaboration with
Circolo Velico Ravennate and sustained by numerous sponsors in memory
of Roberto Trombini well known yachtsmen from Ravenna. The identical
boats (Tom 28, 9 metres were designed for the event by Giovanni
Ceccarelli from Ravenna)
The matches take place within the inner harbour at Marina di Ravenna
and a grandstand to accommodate over 500 spectators has been erected
on the pier; there will be a running commentary during the races
and interviews with the skippers on the pier followed by pleasant
evenings together with the crews, umpires and guests.
WINNERS’ LIST
Without exception, all the big names in world yachting have taken
part in the Trombini challenges over the years. The winners’
list includes James Spithill (actual helm of Luna Rossa Challenge),
Magnus Holmberg – Swedish _ (team leader and helm of Victory
Challenge) and Peter Holmberg from the U.S. Virgin Islands (one
of the Alinghi helms), all with two victories.
The other winners are Mario Celon, who triumphed in the first edition,
Chris Law (GB), Danes Sten Mohr and Jes Gram-Hansen (start helm
of the Mascalzone Latino-Capitalia Team), Paolo Cian (helm of Team
Shosholoza), up to the 2006 edition won by Chris Dickson, skipper
and helm of BMW Oracle.
