· XI Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy: next to the last day of the Match Races
· Light wind: tomorrow last quarter-finals
· Paolo Cian and Sebastien Col qualify
· Spithill and Williams at the play-off

Third and last but one day of Match Races at Marina di Ravenna for the XI Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy. Good weather conditions return but the wind was too light and almost disappeared before the end of the quarter-finals. The first 2 skippers to qualify for the semi-finals are Paolo Cian who beat Flavio Favini (Mascalzone Latino Capitalia Team 3-0, and Sebastien Col (K-Challenge) who beat the English champion Ben Ainslie (Emirates Team of New Zealand)
3-1. Play off, 2-2, for the 2 experts of the Round Robin: Ian Williams against Bjorn Hansen and James Spithill against Sten Mohr. The two play-offs to decide the other two Trombini Trophy semi-finalists will be held tomorrow morning followed by the Semi-finals and the Finals.

In spite of the light wind, the Quarter-finals were spectacular and hard fought. In particular the match between Williams and Hansen (1° and 8° of Round Robin classifications) sparks were flying: the Swedish helmsman won the first match, then two extraordinary victories for the English helmsman: one with a sprint home to win and decisive penalty for Hansen, and the other won with an overtake in extremis jibing in front of the Committee boat. Hansen drew with a hard fought match decided by a penalty to Williams.

Surprising battle between James Spithill (Luna Rossa Challenge) and Sten Mohr. The young Australian went to 2-0 with 2 clear victories but he was reached by Mohr thank to two intense matches fought with no holds barred until the
2-2 that will need to be played off. The favourite James Spithill will have to struggle to qualify.

Also the Italian derby between Paolo Cian (Gruppo Vela delle Fiamme Gialle) and Flavio Favini ( Mascalzone LatinoCapitalia Team) was not so easy as the than the results, 3-0, suggest. Minimum gaps for the duration of the three matches, a lot of close moves up and overtakes but, thanks to his great match race experience, the helmsman from Naples won. However it was a virtuous participation for Flavio Favini at the XI Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy.

It was also a difficult victory for Sebastien Col (K-Challenge) against Ben Ainslie (Emirates Team New Zealand): the British medallist of the Olympic Game in the lead at the beginning and the Frenchman had to fight hard to win the successive three matches.

Technical data of TOM 28

Tom 28 was thought-out and accomplished by Ravenna designer, Giovanni Ceccarelli, for the Trombini Match Race. For the realization of this monotype the designer sought the collaboration of the technical directors of the Ravenna event and some of the most well-known yachtsmen. The eight and a half metres long Tom 28 is the most advanced monotype for Match Racing in the world.
A guarantee of greater performance: light and with very ample sails, exceptional manoeuvrability even with light wind, the Tom 28 represents yet another reason to attend the'Trombini'regattas.

America’s Cup,
the birthof Match Racing - a bit of history

It all started in 1851 around the Isle of Wight; it was a race open to all nations but only one American yacht, named simply America, challenged 16 English boats for a solid silver cup weighing over 4 kg known as the “One Hundred Guinea Cup” . America won and from that day it has been known as the “America’s Cup”. The Americans were reigning champions until 1983 when the cup finally changed hands, won by an Australian team with the Australia II; in that same year Italy joined the challenge for the first time with the unforgettable Azzurra. Il Moro di Venezia was the first Italian challenger ever to reach the finals racing against America 3 in 1992. Over the centuries the rules have been modified, the boats have become highly technical but the team spirit, the will to win and the challenge remain the same.
